PFI Spearfishing Weekend Course – All-Inclusive | Vancouver
The PFI Ocean Spearfishing Weekend Course – All-Inclusive with Diving Sports Canada is a premium multi-day freediving and spearfishing expedition traveling from Vancouver to the wild west coast of Vancouver Island in Ucluelet, British Columbia. Designed for experienced freedivers, this immersive program blends professional PFI instruction, conservation-focused harvesting practices, and boat-based spearfishing in some of the most productive cold-water environments in Canada.
This advanced spearfishing course emphasizes species identification, legal size limits, DFO regulations, ethical harvesting, advanced freediving safety systems, dive planning, kelp navigation, current management, and gear configuration. Participants refine their hunting techniques while learning how to operate safely from a dive boat in challenging Pacific Northwest conditions.
Whether your goal is to responsibly harvest your own seafood, expand your ocean hunting skills, or participate in one of British Columbia’s most respected spearfishing charters, this weekend delivers elite-level training combined with unforgettable adventure.
Location:
Ucluelet, British Columbia — boat-based spearfishing on world-class coastal reefs and kelp forests.
Course Capacity:
Limited to 4 divers for personalized coaching and maximum safety.
Course Description:
- Two full days of boat-based freediving and spearfishing instruction
- PFI Ocean Spearfishing Freediver Certification upon successful completion
- Detailed workshops on fish identification, invertebrate harvesting, and seasonal patterns
- Understanding BC fishing regulations, DFO compliance, and conservation ethics
- Advanced freediving safety, rescue scenarios, and team procedures
- Hunting strategies for kelp forests, reefs, surge zones, and low-visibility environments
- Equipment selection, rigging, float systems, and speargun setup
- Dive planning for tides, swell, boat traffic, and weather windows
Where Are We Going?
We travel to the west coast of Vancouver Island to dive the most productive spearfishing zones around Ucluelet. These nutrient-rich waters are home to lingcod, rockfish, greenling, sea urchin, and sea cucumber. Every charter is planned around conditions to maximize safety, sustainability, and success.
All divers must carry a valid British Columbia fishing license for the duration of the charter.
Sample Itinerary:
Friday:
- 10:00 AM – Meet at shop, pack van, depart Vancouver
- Ferry from Horseshoe Bay to Nanaimo
- Drive to Ucluelet & arrival at accommodation (~4:00 PM)
- Evening classroom session covering species identification, DFO rules, dive planning, spearfishing ethics, safety protocols, and equipment configuration
Saturday & Sunday:
- 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM – Boat-based freediving and spearfishing charters
Sunday Evening:
- Return ferry to Vancouver (~7:00 PM)

Prerequisites:
- Minimum age: 18
- PFI Freediver or equivalent certification
- Minimum 25 cold-water dives
- Recent cold-water experience (within 6 months)
- Comfortable diving to 12–15m
- Completed medical form
Transportation:
Transportation is provided in our 7-passenger van from Vancouver to Ucluelet and back. Seating is limited and allocated first-come. Divers may arrange their own transportation if preferred.
